With the recent press conference in the iphone4. I was twisted, confused, and concerned…not by Apple but by people in general. The announcements made yesterday about the not only the iphone4 but also other phones having antenna issues and inaccurate bar indications was a breath of fresh air in terms of making people aware. I think until now, no one understood or even wanted to understand than to “make that call”. Apple brought up great points about the industry has a huge task to figure out how to make phones better and how to make radios better. I always was aware that bars were a very small estimation of what is really going on from the network. The terms “bars” is even silly itself and I would rather just stick with percentages.
I’m glad Apple offered its usual bit of free cases, bumpers or an entire refund. Really for now, that is the best solution and it will help people make calls. However many articles have disregarded this gift and really wanted an answer of WHY the iPhone4 isn’t better. They are leaving Apple up for responsibility for the entire smartphone market. This bothers me deep to my core because Apple isn’t a phone company, it’s a computer/software business. Yes they have created the top selling smartphone among consumers but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the end all solution to the problem of an entire industry. Do I believe they could solve the problem? Yes I do. Should they? No, only if they want to. Really this iphone4 issue was nothing about Apple finally admitting it was wrong but for Apple to have responsibility for all actions in the world of smart phones.
I think underlying problems are also needed to be factored in. Just because this issue became a reality shows that Apple, like other cell phone companies have a struggle. They most constantly try to make new antenna to deal with the ever demand of consumer markets. On top of this, I feel like the weight was taken off of network carriers as the issue. The fact that ATT wasn’t brought up for any issue at all is leaving that stale taste in your mouth from a long night of drinking. ATT networks and others need to be upgraded, researched, and expanded for the growing market. Now that consumers are aware of other issue involved, make it known how you want to deal with it, not by blaming one company but look at others too.
